Clearance Sale: Botanical Inspired Ceramic Plant Pots
UPDATE: SORRY THE SALE HAS BEEN AND GONE
I’m having a clearance sale. Yay! When, where, how I hear you ask. Well it’s coming up at the end of the month, 27th to 30th August 2021, and it will be a sale of some of my botanical ceramics.
I’ve been making these pots for a few years now using one of my botanical lino prints for inspiration for the surface pattern, and the time has come to make some room, to have a clear out and to make new ideas come to life
So let’s have a sale. But before I get in to the details, let me give you some background info
How did I get into ceramics in the first place?
Years and years ago, after I finished my GCSEs I knew I wanted to have a career in the visual arts so I signed up for a BTEC arts course at my local higher ed college. It was during this time that I really got into ceramics and was encouraged to apply for a Degree in Ceramics. I eventually went on to do a BA HONS in 3D Design: Ceramic at Bath Spa University College.
My work during this time was very nature inspired and for my final year I made a range of tables based on sea urchins
After my degree, 1997, it was hard to find studio space that was affordable and would allow you to use a kiln, which is pretty vital for ceramics. So I reluctantly gave it up. However, in the long run it was a good thing as I probably wouldn’t be doing all the botanical lino prints and sculptures that I am doing now.
How did my botanical inspired plant pots come to be?
Fast forward 20 years and I am teaching at Bristol Folk House. And as perk of being a tutor we get really good discounts on courses so I thought I give ceramics another go. Since it had been I long time since I did any ceramics I didn’t really have a plan. I just wanted to get back into the swing of things.
I started off by having a go at throwing, then coil built pots and then I began thinking how it would be nice to incorporate lino in with my designs
So after a little bit of experimenting in pressing lino into the clay I ended up creating a plaster mould instead by using a detail from my Sedum Rubrotinctum botanical lino print
The lino print was created during 2016 when I was an exhibitor and demonstrator at Art in Action and for one of my demos pieces I made a succulent design, of a Sedum Rubrotinctum plant.
How are they made?
All my pots are made using red earthenware or white stoneware clay.
I roll out a slab of clay and then press it into a plaster mould I made from one of my lino prints. This creates the raised botanical surface pattern.
I then trim the edges and form it around a tube. Cut to size and join the edges to may a cylinder
A separate slab is rolled and joined to the cylinder to create a base. It is trimmed and the joins are neatened up before drying and being put into the kiln for it’s first firing (bisque firing)
After the first firing I then apply a earthenware or stoneware glaze, depending on the clay base. Then to reveal the raised pattern I scrap back the glaze to reveal the clay. It is put back into the kiln and glazed fired.
