Green and Red Reduction Lino Print - Pressing Matters Magazine Issue 24 Print Challenge

Pressing Matters is a Magazine created by printmakers for printmakers and it is released quarterly in January, April, July and October. For each issue they ask their Instagram followers to produce a piece of print with a limited colour palette. For issue 24 the colours were Green and Red and I rose to the challenge. I felt the colours fitted really well with my Botanical Lino Prints and I’m delighted to be selected for their list of favourite entries to appear in the magazines showcase gallery

For my entry I decided to do a Reduction Lino Print of one of my favourite Spiky succulent plants, a Haworthia Succulent, aka a Zebra Plant

Below are some progress shots showing some of the layers as I printed them

The making of Zebra Plant Reduction Lino Print in Images

The design was traced onto the Lino ready to be carved.

For the 1st layer I applied multiple greens and a red to the plant section of the print

I used 36gsm Awagami Kitakata Green, a beautiful pale green Japanese paper to print my Zebra Plant onto

I cut away the green areas of the Lino, just leaving the stripes of the plant and the plant pot and based

For the 2nd layer I once again used 2 colours

First I used a dark green for the inside of the pot and then a bright red for the bottom half of the print

For the final layer I had cut away the inner pot and the stripy base

Then I printed another red for the plant pot and white on the stripes on the plant
